I’m sorry, you’re just not my typeface

Hello typeface font example

It’s not what you say, it’s how you say it

Words are great. I love words. I have all the best words…

Sometimes, though, it is not the words themselves that convey the message but the way in which they are presented. Today we’re not talking tweets (presidential or otherwise) but typefaces. In particular, how a careful use of type can enhance a design. Just as a careless one can destroy it. (more…)

Styling it out

Jon Stubbington Artist Illustrator Banner Portfolio

I updated my portfolio here on jonstubbington.com recently, and it got me thinking about style.

I’m not, I should rush to point out, speaking sartorially here. Anyone who has seen me try to “dress nice” knows that style and I are only loosely acquainted. No, I am talking today about artistic style. Or, as it turns out, styles. (more…)

Rivers and floods: it’s all happening this Saturday

National Flash Fiction Day NFFD jon stubbington author writer

This is only a brief post, and that is perhaps apt. For today one of the things I want to tell you about is the imminent National Flash Fiction Day.

NFFD 2017 is happening this Saturday, the 24th, celebrating the small and succinct writing art form that is flash fiction. With a whole programme of events, an anthology to buy, and heaps of flash fiction to read, there is something for everyone to get involved with.

And, with my occasional writer’s hat on (it’s the slightly dusty one I keep in the cupboard), I am pleased to announce that I have a flash fiction included in this year’s Flash Flood, the 24-hour flash fiction extravaganza that will be found here. My tiny tale is slightly silly (read: very silly) and is called It’s My Story And I’ll Tell It How I Want To. It will be published on the Flash Flood site sometime between 12:00 and 13:00 BST.

I, however, will not be able to read it with my Saturday lunch, for I will be busy elsewhere. Where? you may ask… (more…)

Jon Stubbington has arrived: same me, different name

Jon Stubbington Artist Illustrator Blog Journal

Big news! The website is moving.

For the last three years, I have been known online as Recycled Words. Admittedly, I have been called other names online, but I’m not able to repeat them for fear of offending sensitive ears.

  • My website was www.recycledwords.co.uk
  • My twitter handle was @recycled_words
  • My facebook page was www.facebook.com/recycledwords.co.uk
  • And my shop was www.RecycledWordsArt.etsy.com

That was then. This is now.

Now, I am stepping out from the shadow of Recycled Words and becoming more me. It’s time to be Jon Stubbington. (more…)

A lot of lengths: Swimming the Swoosh

swimmer colourful illustration, gliding, full body picture, outline

Today I need to swim 200 lengths of a pool.

Hang on, you will say, no one needs to swim 200 lengths of a swimming pool. That’s your choice, surely. A mad choice, a crazy choice, but a choice nonetheless. If you are thinking this, then I concede that you may have a point.

Yes, I could sit in the sunshine instead. Or, I could do a mere 100 and call it a day. Perhaps I could say I swam 200 lengths but really just spend my time in the steam room, getting hot. But, come the 24 June, as I stand nervously in the dawn sunlight and contemplate the task ahead, I will regret not getting in that pool and grinding out those lengths. For, on the morning of Saturday the 24th, I will be taking part in the Bantham Swoosh and it will be no respecter of missed sessions and half-arsed excuses. (more…)
